Latest bowl projection for LSU football is laughable
By Zach Ragan
The latest bowl projection for LSU football is extremely disrespectful.
If you’re waiting on the national media to show LSU football some respect in 2020, then I guess you’ll be waiting a while.
The latest bowl projection for the Tigers from CBS Sports isn’t just laughable, it’s downright disrespectful.
CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm released his new predictions on Wednesday morning and he has LSU playing Appalachian State in the Outback Bowl.
I’m sorry, what?
Of the 10 teams to play in the Outback Bowl over the last five years, four of those teams have been unranked. So based on Palm’s projection, he sees the Tigers finishing the 2020 season as a fringe top 25 team.
Not only that, but Palm also has Texas A&M and Auburn landing in “better” bowl games (Texas A&M to the Fiesta Bowl and Auburn to the Peach Bowl).
I shouldn’t be surprised at this projection, especially after the lack of respect LSU has received all offseason. But I thought surely, considering the talent the Tigers have, that Palm would have the Tigers in a better bowl game than the Outback Bowl (no disrespect to the Outback Bowl, but it’s reserved for teams like Tennessee and South Carolina).
This projection is even worse when you consider that Palm didn’t include Big 10 teams or Pac-12 teams.
The national media continues to get it wrong when it comes to LSU football
The main reason that the national media is down on LSU football heading into 2020 is because of all the talent the Tigers lost from their 2019 national championship-winning squad.
And look, I get it. LSU lost 14 players to the 2020 NFL Draft. Several other key players signed as undrafted free agents. That’s a lot of talent gone.
But the Tigers still have plenty of talent. Myles Brennan has an NFL arm. Ja’Marr Chase is the best wide receiver in the nation. Derek Stingley Jr isn’t just the best cornerback in the nation, he may be the best college football player in the nation.
Plus there’s the talent that Ed Orgeron has brought to Baton Rouge in recent years. LSU’s 2019 signing class was ranked No. 5 in the nation. The 2020 class was ranked No. 4 in the nation.
I don’t know if the Tigers will compete for a spot in the College Football Playoff in 2020 (though they certainly could), but I don’t think there’s any doubt that LSU has the talent to be a force this season.
The national media is going to learn an important lesson this year about doubting Coach O.
