LSU Football: Tigers’ next addition is beyond obvious
By Zach Ragan
LSU football could be adding a key player in the not-so-distant future.
Earlier this week, LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron made it clear that he’d like to add a defensive back to the Tigers’ roster.
“If there is a corner or maybe a nickel corner that’s out there, that’s available, we may take them. We could use them right now because we’re a little short,” said Orgeron during a virtual media session with reporters (via 247Sports).
Coach O could be getting his wish because just a couple of days after making this comment, Nicholls State cornerback Darren Evans hit the transfer portal.
Evans, 6-foot-3/180 lbs, signed with Nicholls State out of high school. He wasn’t rated by the major recruiting services.
Evans is a perfect fit for LSU football
It’s probably not a coincidence that Evans hit the portal just days after Orgeron said LSU needs a cornerback. When Evans heard those words, he probably couldn’t get into the portal fast enough.
Evans, after all, is a Baton Rouge native, so I’m sure he’d love to spend his final year of eligibility playing at LSU (even though it’s going to be a weird season with limited fans…it’s still LSU and the SEC).
The redshirt senior started 14 games at cornerback for Nicholls State last season. He was named to the All-Southland second team. There’s no doubt he has plenty of experience. And he has the talent.
Evans wouldn’t be expected to start for the Tigers if he lands in Baton Rouge, but he’d provide LSU with some much-needed depth. Derek Stingley, Jr., Eli Ricks, and Cordale Flott will likely be the starting cornerbacks for the Tigers in 2020, but added depth (that’s experienced) is always necessary.
By the way, it should be noted that 247Sports writer Billy Embody made a “crystal ball prediction” for Evans to LSU this week. It seems like a foregone conclusion that the Louisiana native will be a Tiger in 2020.
