LSU football won’t have one of their best players in 2020.

A few weeks ago, LSU football wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase was planning on playing in 2020.

Chase’s father told The Advocate’s Brooks Kubena that his son was “locked in” for the 2020 season.

On Sunday, that decision was reversed. Chase reportedly won’t be playing for the Tigers in 2020.

CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd reported on Sunday that Chase is expected to opt out of the 2020 season and instead focus on the 2021 NFL Draft.

“A formal announcement is expected Monday with Chase, the nation’s top returning wideout, declaring for the 2021 NFL Draft. ‘It’s 100% happening,’ a highly-placed source close said Sunday,” wrote Dodd.

While the news isn’t official, it sounds like it won’t be long before Chase confirms the report from CBS Sports.

LSU football’s Ja’Marr Chase is making the right decision

It goes without saying that not having Chase will significantly weaken LSU’s offense in 2020. Chase is one of the best players in the nation. He’s undoubtedly the top wide receiver in college football (Chase was going to be Myles Brennan’s best friend on the field in 2020).

But I can’t blame Chase for making this decision.

Look, the Louisiana native is going to be a top-five or top-ten pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. There’s nothing he can do in 2020 to raise his draft stock.

Why risk contracting COVID-19 and passing it to a family member if you’re Chase?

I could see staying if the season was going to be played as normal. But it’s not. The pageantry and tradition that makes college football so great have been stripped from the sport.

Chase is putting his future and his first. He’s making a business decision that I think most parents would agree is smart.

Hopefully, most LSU fans agree. The comments I’ve seen so far on social media have been mostly supportive. But all it takes is a few bad comments to make a whole fan base look bad.
