LSU football recruits better than its rivals in the SEC.

LSU football won a recruiting battle over a couple of their SEC West rivals on Sunday and it had a lot to do with how the Tigers approach recruiting.

2021 three-star tight end Jalen Shead committed to LSU over Alabama and Ole Miss on Sunday.

Shead, 6-foot-4/240 lbs from Olive Branch, MS, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 13 player in the state of Mississippi and the No. 50 tight end in the nation.

The recruiting services aren’t high on Shead, but it’s clear from Alabama and LSU’s pursuit of the tight end that he’s a talented player.

So how did LSU land the Mississippi native over Alabama and Ole Miss?

It’s all about relationships. And no one builds relationships like the Tigers.

What LSU football did right in Shead’s recruitment

After Shead committed to LSU on Sunday he spoke to Rivals about his recruitment.

And there was something specific he said that immediately stood out.

“LSU recruited me differently from the other schools,” said Shead. “That made a big difference. They tried to get to know me, they got attached to me, they built strong relationships and that is what really pushed them ahead of Alabama and Ole Miss.”

The three-star tight end added, “They recruited me the hardest, they got to know me the most and they made me feel important. They made me feel wanted and not just needed. They are just different.”

There’s no substitute for building great relationships. And it’s something that Ed Orgeron and the Tigers apparently do a lot better than Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide.
