LSU football will be without stud wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase in 2020.

On Sunday, reports surfaced that LSU football wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase would be choosing to opt out of the 2020 college football season.

Those reports were confirmed on Monday when Chase released a statement (via Twitter) explaining his decision.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the decision to opt out was difficult for Chase. He’s a competitor in every sense of the word, but it’s clear that he felt opting out was best for him and his family.

“The competitor in me badly wants to play the season and go to war with my brothers, but during this time with so much going on, this is what’s best for my family,” said Chase in his statement. “I also understand the responsibility of being chosen to wear the #7 jersey, and that’s an honor that I don’t take for granted. I have been fighting the thoughts and concerns that have crept into my mind but I cannot ignore what I feel in my heart and this ultimately is the best decision for me.”

The LSU football star struggled with the decision

I can feel the weight of the decision in Chase’s words. It’s obvious that he badly wanted to play one more season in Baton Rouge. There’s no doubt this wasn’t an easy decision.

There’s also no doubt that Chase loves LSU and Louisiana with everything in him.

“It is truly an honor to represent this university, community and the great state of Louisiana,” said Chase in his statement.

LSU fans undoubtedly wanted to see Chase play one more year as a Tiger. But the magical 2019 season will have to be the final memories of Chase suiting up for LSU.

Next. Joe Burrow's preseason wish probably won't be granted. dark

I know it’s not how Tigers fans envisioned it, but it’s a pretty sweet way for Chase to go out (on top of the college football world).
