LSU football was able to get several elite recruits on campus this weekend.

LSU football had numerous elite 2021 recruiting targets on campus this weekend thanks to four-star Tigers commit Garrett Nussmeier.

It’s technically a recruiting dead period right now thanks to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. That means coaches can’t have face-to-face contact with recruits.

But that doesn’t stop recruits from visiting on their own time. And that’s what happened in Baton Rouge this weekend.

Nussmeier set up the massive recruiting weekend that included five-star defensive lineman Korey Foreman and Maason Smith, and four-star offensive lineman Tristian Leigh, among others.

While the majority of the focus was undoubtedly on Foreman and Smith (two of the top 2021 recruits in the nation), it might have been a Texas native that walked away from the weekend with a newfound love for LSU.

LSU football recruiting target impressed during the recruiting weekend

2021 four-star offensive tackle Savion Byrd is one of the Tigers’ top recruiting targets.

Byrd, 6-foot-5/265 lbs from Duncanville, TX, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 8 player in the state of Texas and the No. 6 offensive tackle in the nation. He’s also rated as the No. 43 player in the nation.

The elite offensive lineman rode with Nussmeier to Baton Rouge for the recruiting weekend and came away extremely impressed — at least according to Nussmeier.

“I think the person, to be honest with you, that was most impressed Savion Byrd,” said Nussmeier to 247Sports this weekend.

Nussmeier added, ” I think he had an entirely different image of what he thought Baton Rouge was gonna be. So that was really eye-opening to him.”

Oklahoma and Texas, along with SMU, are also factors for Byrd. So this is going to be an intense battle.

But it certainly sounds like the Tigers are firmly in the mix after managing to get Byrd on campus.
