Could LSU football get a big boost in the coming days?

LSU football defensive tackle Tyler Shelvin, a redshirt junior, announced a few weeks ago that he was opting out of the 2020 season.

Shelvin was a key part of the Tigers’ defense in 2019. He was going to be even more important in Bo Pelini’s new 4-3 defense in 2020.

Apparently, there’s still a chance that Shelvin plays in 2020. Rumors have been circulating that Shelvin is considering opting back into the season.

LSU head coach Ed Orgeron commented on those rumors on Tuesday.

Coach O would welcome Shelvin back to LSU football

Orgeron was asked on Tuesday about Shelvin potentially returning to the Tigers.

In true Coach O fashion, the LSU head coach was quite candid.

Orgeron acknowledged there have been “rumblings” about Shelvin coming back to LSU.

“We’d take him back. We want him back…If he doesn’t want to come back, then we wish him the best. If not, like any member of our family, we’ll take him back,” said Coach O (via Broks Kubena).

It was a big deal when Shelvin announced that he planned to return to LSU for his redshirt junior season, instead of declaring for the NFL Draft.

It will be an even bigger deal if he chooses to play in 2020 after opting out.

Shelvin was a force for the Tigers in 2019, totaling 39 tackles and three tackles for loss while being a disruptive force in the middle of the defensive line.

Anytime you can get a future NFL draft pick to return, it’s a good thing.

Considering all the talent the Tigers have lost to the NFL and opt outs, getting Shelvin back would be a huge offseason win for LSU.
