One of LSU football’s top recruiting targets inadvertently threw some shade at the Georgia Bulldogs.

There’s nothing I love more than some SEC shade, which is why I loved reading recent comments from 2021 LSU football recruiting target Maason Smith.

The five-star defensive tackle is being heavily recruited by numerous programs, including Alabama, Florida, Miami, Oklahoma, Oregon, and USC.

Those programs are all in the mix for Smith, but this appears to be a recruiting battle that will come to Georgia and LSU.

Smith recently visited Athens and Baton Rouge with a group of fellow 2021 commits and he seemed to enjoy his trip to both campuses.

However, while recently discussing the trips with 247Sports, Smith inadvertently threw some shade at the Bulldogs.

LSU football recruiting target slights Georgia’s defensive line

“They haven’t put out a lot of great d-linemen in recent years. With them using big 99 Jordan Davis, I could see myself doing big things in the middle and at the five technique,” said Smith.

I mean, I only take that comment one way — Georgia doesn’t put out good defensive lineman.

Maybe that’s not the way Smith intended for that comment to come across, but that’s definitely how I read it.

Meanwhile, LSU has a tremendous reputation for developing defensive linemen. Ed Orgeron is a defensive line coach at heart and he’s one of the best.

It’s hard for me to envision Smith landing somewhere other than LSU. It’s close to home, he has a good relationship with the staff and he knows the Tigers can get him to the NFL.

Plus, LSU wins championships. That’s something Georgia can’t say at the moment.

What more could a recruit want?

Smith, 6-foot-5/316 lbs from Houma, LA (Terrebonne), is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 3 defensive tackle in the nation and the No. 1 player in the state of Louisiana. He’s also rated as the No. 19 overall recruit in the nation.
