The next big SEC star is an LSU football running back.

LSU football is no stranger to a star-studded roster.

The Tigers had 14 players selected in the 2020 NFL Draft, including players like Joe Burrow and Clyde Edwards-Helaire who became household names last season (as well as wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who will likely be a top 10 selection in the 2021 NFL Draft).

One of the big questions surrounding LSU in 2020 is how can the Tigers make up for the extreme loss of talent the team suffered after winning the national championship in 2019.

Well, fortunately for LSU, there’s plenty of talent left in the cupboard — including a player who could be the next star of the SEC.

LSU football has a potentially dominant running back on the roster

Replacing Edwards-Helaire, who was drafted with the No. 32 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Kansas City Chiefs, obviously won’t be easy for the Tigers.

Edwards-Helaire rushed for 1,414 yards and caught 55 passes for 453 yards last season. That’s a lot of production to replace.

But the Tigers have a player that could be absolutely electric waiting in the wings to take over for Edwards-Helaire.

Sophomore running back John Emery Jr.

It’s easy to forget, with all the talent that LSU lost, that Emery was rated as the No. 2 overall running back in the nation in the 2019 recruiting class.

Emery didn’t see a lot of action last season — he rushed for 188 yards and caught 6 passes for 66 yards — but he should be one of LSU’s go-to players on offense in 2020.

In fact, the former five-star running back is already earning rave reviews during fall camp.

247Sports writer Shea Dixon reported this week that sources at LSU told him Emery can “do things in the open field that just drop your jaw”.

It’s unclear exactly what Emery’s role will be in the Tigers’ offense this season (Tyrion Davis-Prince will be a factor as well), but I think it’s obvious that the Louisiana native has a chance to be an absolute star in the SEC.

LSU may have lost a lot of talent this past offseason, but Ed Orgeron and his staff have done a nice job of restocking and reloading.
