LSU football assistant starts working early in the morning hours
By Zach Ragan
LSU football offensive line coach James Cregg is obviously an early riser.
It’s no secret that college coaches love to get to work early, so it’s no surprise that LSU football‘s coaching staff gets to the office in the early morning hours.
One assistant, however, might get to work earlier than anyone else on staff, though.
Offensive line coach James Cregg gets to work essentially in the middle of the night, according to Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron.
Coach O said this week that Cregg gets to work around 3:30 AM.
LSU football recruiting never stops
The reason Cregg gets to work so early?
Well, one reason is to check out recruiting film and chase down potential prospects.
“I think James Cregg gets to work at 3:30 in the morning,” said Orgeron Wednesday during the SEC coaches’ teleconference (via Rivals). “I walk by at about 6 in the morning and he says, ‘Coach, I need you to watch this young man.’ I watched it and said, ‘You think he can play for us?’ And he said yeah and now he’s going to start for us. I trust my coaches.”
The player that Cregg was watching?
Offensive lineman Liam Shanahan, who is expected to start at center this weekend for the Tigers.
Shanahan is a graduate transfer from Harvard.
LSU makes sure to leave no stone unturned when searching for talented players. And that’s because of the culture that Coach O has built in Baton Rouge.
Hard work, diligence, attention to detail. Those are all traits that Orgeron practically demands from his staff.
And it’s clear from Cregg’s morning routine that those traits are present. It’s part of the reason that LSU is the defending national champs. And it’s the reason they’ll continue to be a threat to win it all.
