LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron addressed an important COVID-19 protocol question this week.

LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron addressed an important COVID-19 protocol this week that I’m not sure has been addressed by anyone else in college football.

The Tigers were unable to play their scheduled matchup against Alabama last week because there were too many LSU players in quarantine. It looks like the Tigers will be able to play against Arkansas this week, though.

On Monday, Orgeron was asked about a comment he made prior to the season that ruffled some feathers.

And his response provided some key details as to how LSU is handling players who have already tested positive for COVID-19.

LSU football is quarantining anyone who is exposed to COVID-19

Earlier this offseason, Coach O told reporters that “most” of his players had already had COVID-19.

Some folks speculated at the time that it meant that LSU viewed their players as being “immune” to the virus.

But that’s not the case. Just because a player has had COVID-19 doesn’t mean that they’re treated any different. They’re still subject to the same guidelines as any other player.

“That’s the protocol,” said Coach O this week when asked about quarantining players have already had COVID-19 (via Rivals).

“Obviously there’s different opinions on that, but I’m not a doctor. They make the rules.”

This means that a player can be forced to miss a game — even if they’ve already had COVID-19 earlier this season — if they’re exposed to the virus.

I think that’s the right approach to take. There’s not enough science to guarantee any sort of immunity, so there’s certainly no point in risking anyone’s health (or spreading the virus).
