LSU football couldn’t hang with the Alabama Crimson Tide on Saturday night.

No one expected LSU football to beat Alabama on Saturday night in Baton Rouge.

In fact, I don’t think anyone even expected the game to be close (and it wasn’t…Bama won 55-17).

But even though the game was what folks were expecting, it was still a huge loss.

Losing to Alabama is never fun. And it’s never a good thing.

While the loss didn’t surprise me, the statement that Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron made after the game left me puzzled.

What is LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron thinking?

I’ve always admired Coach O’s optimism. He’s tough when he needs to be, but he usually has a positive outlook regardless of the situation.

That was no different on Saturday night after LSU’s loss.

But this time I think Orgeron was a bit too optimistic.

Coach O was asked whether or not the loss to Bama would help recruiting.

I didn’t love the question, though I understand that the reporter was insinuating that the loss showed how much the Tigers need top recruits. And it shows that they’ll have a chance to play early.

Orgeron stated that he thought the loss would help recruiting.

“I think it helps recruiting,” said Orgeron (via 247Sports). “Recruiting has been fine. Our guys stuck with us and commitments stuck with us.”

Coach O is right that recruiting is fine.

But it could be better.

LSU recently lost a commitment from four-star defensive end, Naquan Brown. And it’s starting to look like the Tigers aren’t going to land five-star defensive end Korey Foreman.

Great recruits — the type of players that LSU is targeting — don’t need a promise of playing time. They want to go to teams that are winning. The Tigers may have won it all last year, but the message from rival schools is that LSU was a one-year wonder.

So no, I don’t know think losing to Alabama will help the Tigers in recruiting. I think it’ll help the Tide (and others) in recruiting.

Coach O missed the mark big time on this one.
