LSU Football: Arik Gilbert’s best shot at NFL is to remain in Baton Rouge
By Zach Ragan
LSU football is having a tough season.
Things haven’t been going well for LSU football this season.
On top of a trying season, the program has had to deal with numerous player opt-outs.
Star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase opted out of the season before the first game of the year.
Terrace Marshall Jr, the wide receiver who stepped up in Chase’s place, opted out after the Tigers’ loss to Texas A&M in late November.
Marshall may not be the last star player to opt out.
LSU football tight end Arik Gilbert could be on the move
Rumors started swirling on Monday that Tigers true freshman Arik Gilbert was thinking about transferring.
LSU head coach Ed Orgeron confirmed those rumors on Tuesday morning during a radio interview with 104.5 in Baton Rouge.
It appears that Gilbert could opt out and choose to transfer closer to home (Georgia), which would be completely understandable. I’m all for players being able to transfer and play immediately. If coaches can leave at the drop of a hat, players should be able to as well.
But I think it would be a mistake by Gilbert, as far as his professional career goes.
I know things are tough in Baton Rouge right now — the program has been through a lot this year. But it’s going to get better.
Gilbert could have a monster season for the Tigers in 2021. Quarterback Myles Brennan will be back and he’ll be 100 percent. This season, Brennan was on pace to put up Joe Burrow-like numbers before he suffered an injury to his abdomen.
Imagine how good Brennan will be next year with the experience he gained this year?!?!
There’s not a better quarterback for Gilbert to play with in 2021 than Brennan. The duo has already started building chemistry this season. It would be a shame to see that connection never fully develop.
We already know that GIlbert is an athletic freak. But simply being an athletic freak isn’t enough to be a top-five pick in the NFL Draft.
Gilbert needs the numbers to prove he’s worthy of being a top selection in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Staying at LSU would give him the best chance at achieving those numbers.
