LSU Football: The perfect OC hire for the Tigers
By Zach Ragan
LSU football needs a new offensive coordinator to replace Steve Ensminger.
Steve Ensminger won’t return as LSU football‘s offensive coordinator in 2021 (his choice, he’s moving to an off-the-field role), which means the Tigers need a new play-caller.
(Passing game coordinator Scott Linehan is also not returning to Baton Rouge, though it’s unclear how head coach Ed Orgeron will handle that position.)
There are plenty of interesting names to take Ensminger’s spot. Pretty much anyone with experience.
But there’s one name that intrigues me more than any of the others.
Former Mississippi State head coach Joe Moorhead.
Joe Moorhead makes perfect sense for LSU football
Moorhead, who is currently the offensive coordinator at Orgeron, makes perfect sense for the Tigers.
And it’s all because of the Joe Brady connection.
Moorhead and Brady worked together for one season (2016) at Penn State. And they made an immediate connection.
Brady worked as Moorhead’s primary graduate assistant — primarily with quarterbacks. That one year together influenced Brady’s offensive philosophy in a big way. Moorhead essentially took Brady under his wing at Penn State.
Now, if you’re LSU, you obviously want to relive the 2019 season.
And Brady was one of the biggest reasons for the Tigers’ success that season.
So why not go for the guy that helped shape Brady’s offensive ideology?
Moorhead needs to be the guy. And I think he’d leave Oregon for LSU. If for no other reason, because LSU was the first program to give Brady an on-field coaching job.
By the way, when the Tigers hired Brady, Moorhead was one of the first coaches to text Orgeron.
“I told him what a fantastic hire I thought it was,” said Moorhead of texting Coach O after LSU hired Brady (via nola.com).
If Orgeron wants to nail this hire, he’ll find a way to bring Joe Moorhead to LSU.
