LSU football is among the top schools for an elite 2023 running back.

LSU football is one of the teams to beat for an elite 2023 running back.

Four-star running back Rueben Owens included the Tigers among his top five schools on Sunday evening, along with Georgia, Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas A&M.

Owens, 5-foot-11/187 lbs from El Campo, TX (El Campo), is rated by 247Sports as the No. 2 running back in the 2023 recruiting class and the No. 1 player in the state of Texas. He’s also rated as the No. 26 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.

There have been two 247Sports crystal ball predictions made for Owens so far and they both have the Sooners landing the talented running back.

It’s early, but this is a recruit LSU football needs to make a priority

There are plenty of folks who think running backs are a dime a dozen, but anyone who watches SEC football knows that isn’t the case.

There aren’t many Leonard Fournettes or Clyde Edwards-Helaire’s taking the field on Saturdays in the fall.

Owens, however, has the potential to be that type of talent in college.

247Sports midland region recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks describes Owens as a player who “flashes impressive balance and tackle-breaking ability at the second level”.

Brooks also notes that Owens has “impressive foot quickness that allows for stringing moves together in the open field” and is a “capable pass-catcher out of the backfield”.

The NFL comparison for Owens, according to Brooks, is former Alabama running back TJ Yeldon.

That sounds like the type of player who could thrive in Baton Rouge.

Next. LSU should add former South Carolina assistant. dark

There’s obviously a long way to go in Owens’ recruitment, and a lot will change between now and the 2023 signing period, but the Tigers are at least off to a nice start in their pursuit of the elite Texas native.
