Will Myles Brennan be LSU football’ starting quarterback in 2021?

Myles Brennan started the first three games of the 2020 season for LSU football before an abdomen injury sidelined him for the final seven games of the year.

In those three games, Brennan tossed for 1,112 yards, 11 touchdowns, and three interceptions.

Over a 15 game season, those numbers would extrapolate to 5,560 yards, 55 touchdowns, and 15 interceptions

In other words, Brennan was on a Joe Burrow-like pace last season before his injury.

Seems like a no-brainer that Brennan will be LSU’s starting quarterback in 2021, right?

Not so fast.

Ed Orgeron isn’t ready to commit to Myles Brennan as LSU football’s starting quarterback in 2021

Coach O was asked on Wednesday about the Tigers’ starting quarterback position in 2021.

Orgeron’s response essentially indicated that there will be an open battle for the job this spring.

“It’s very interesting…it’s always a competition,” said Oregon (via Brooks Kubena).

Coach O also said he needs to talk to new offensive coordinator Jake Peetz about the starting quarterback position.

I can somewhat understand where Orgeron is coming from. Competition is always a good thing. It brings out the best in football players.

But at the same time, I think it’s important for players to know who the starting quarterback is going to be.

If you have uncertainty, it could impact the rest of the team.

And that’s obviously a negative.

On top of that, there’s also the fact that Brennan — if healthy — is a Heisman Trophy caliber quarterback.

Next. Ja'Marr Chase likely won't be top WR selected in 2021 NFL Draft. dark

It’s obvious from the numbers he put up in three games that Brennan would’ve been a Heisman finalist. I’m not saying he would’ve won, but he would’ve been very much in the conversation.

When you have a quarterback of that caliber, why not go ahead and anoint him as the starter?

Brennan should be even better in 2021. There’s no need to be coy about this one — Orgeron needs to commit publicly to Brennan as early as possible
