LSU football is still looking for a defensive coordinator to replace Bo Pelini.

LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron is taking his time in his search for a new defensive coordinator.

Orgeron told reporters this week that he wanted to lock down the Tigers’ new offensive coordinator before shifting his focus to the defensive coordinator search.

“The priority for me was always getting the right guys on offense because that’s not my specialty,” said Orgeron on Wednesday (via 247Sports).

“I knew that I could wait and get the right guys on defense and I know we’re going to get them. I have a good idea of who that is going to be, we just have to be patient, wait until the right time.”

Could LSU football steal a defensive coordinator from a rival?

LSU initially took a swing at Marcus Freeman, the Cincinnati Bearcats defensive coordinator who opted to take a job on Brian Kelly’s staff at Notre Dame instead.

The search has essentially reset since missing on Freeman.

Plenty of names have been mentioned and so far there’s no indication that Orgeron is leaning toward a particular candidate.

One name that was mentioned this week is Alabama defensive coordinator Pete Golding.

Billy Embody, who covers the Tigers for 247Sports, said on Thursday that he’s heard Golding’s name connected to LSU.

Texas is also reportedly showing strong interest in Golding (Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian was previously on staff at Alabama with Golding).

I think the odds of Golding landing in Baton Rouge are slim. This is likely a scenario where Orgeron is simply doing his due diligence.

Of course, coaching searches tend to get wild. So you can never rule anything out. But I’d be surprised if Golding left Alabama to join Coach O’s staff at LSU.
