Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer is expected to become the next head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer appears to be on the verge of returning to coaching.

According to multiple reports, Meyer is close to finalizing a deal to become the next head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Meyer, who has won three national championships at the collegiate level, has never coached in the NFL before. He’s also been “retired” since the end of the 2018 season after leading the Buckeyes for seven seasons.

This might seem like something that won’t have any impact on LSU football, but it’s actually possible that it might.

Could LSU football lose an assistant to Urban Meyer?

If Meyer ends up becoming the head coach of the Jaguars, the first thing he’ll likely do is start building a staff.

Meyer will probably look to old contacts, friends, and folks who have some NFL experience to fill out his staff.

And there’s a coach on LSU’s staff that could end up being a target.

Offensive line coach James Cregg, who has coached at LSU since 2018, could definitely be someone that Meyer is interested in hiring.

Cregg has NFL experience (he’s coached with the Oakland Raiders, Denver Broncos, and Los Angeles Chargers) and most importantly he has a connection to Meyer.

Meyer was a wide receivers coach at Colorado State when Cregg played for the Rams.

The two have never coached together, but it’s certainly feasible that Cregg could return to the NFL.

Coaching in the NFL is a preferred job for a lot of assistants — thanks to the lack of recruiting.

For that reason, I think it’s worth keeping an eye on who Meyer ends up hiring to his staff. Don’t be surprised if Cregg gets a serious look.
