I can’t believe I’m writing this, but ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg suggested this week that LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron could be on the hot seat in 2021.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Rittenberg thinks that Orgeron, the coach that led LSU to one of the greatest seasons in college football history (maybe the greatest, but that’s subjective) in 2019, could be in danger of losing his job entering the 2021 season.

This might be the biggest reach I’ve seen so far this year.

There’s no way LSU football’s Ed Orgeron should be considered on the hot seat in 2021

Look, I know things didn’t go well for the Tigers in 2020. Losing to Mississippi State is never a good look for a proud LSU program.

But what Orgeron had to deal with in 2020 was unprecedented.

On top of COVID-19 (which impacted every program), Orgeron had to deal with an insane amount of roster attrition. 14 players from the 2019 squad were selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. Several others landed in the NFL as undrafted free agents.

Then there were the opt-outs of key offensive players like wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Terrace Marshall Jr. As well as tight end Arik Gilbert.

Oh, and LSU’s starting quarterback Myles Brennan was hurt early in the season, forcing the Tigers to rely on two true freshmen quarterbacks.

And let’s not forget to mention that Orgeron’s hiring of Bo Pelini as LSU’s defensive coordinator (which was widely celebrated) didn’t work out and likely cost the Tigers some wins.

Despite all of this adversity, LSU still managed to finish 5-5 (which included a win against a very good Florida Gators team).

Next. Will Nick Saban try to steal new LSU assistant?. dark

All things considered, I think Coach O did a tremendous job in 2020. And I think the future is bright in 2021 (especially with a loaded recruiting class on the way).

ESPN missed the mark on this one. Big time.
