LSU football received some not-so-good news on Sunday morning.

2022 four-star defensive tackle Shone Washington announced (via Twitter) that he’s de-committing from the Tigers.

Washington originally committed to LSU last August.

“Thank you Coach O and Coach Johnson for the opportunity to be a Tiger,” said Washington in a tweet.

“2020 has been a hard year for me, I have dealt with a lot. I want to take these next few months to  focus on school, getting my body back healthy, and preparing myself physically with my teammates to get ready for our 2021 season.”

A big loss for LSU football

Washington, 6-foot-3/297 lbs from New Orleans, LA (Warren Easton), is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 21 defensive tackle in the nation and the No. 13 overall player in the state of Louisiana.

The talented defensive lineman has offers from most of the major programs in the nation, including Alabama, Florida, Texas, and USC.

I would expect the Tigers to remain in the mix for Washington. Ed Orgeron doesn’t miss on many elite in-state targets — especially defensive linemen.

But while I expect LSU to remain the favorite for Washington, it’s clear they’ve got some work to do.

Of course, even if a player is committed, the recruiting is never over. So I don’t think LSU will be changing their approach with Washington too much. They’ll continue to show him some love and work to eventually get his signature.

LSU currently has seven players committed to its 2022 recruiting class, including four-star quarterback Walker Howard, who is rated as the No. 34 overall player in the nation.
