LSU football is one of the teams to beat for a 2021 three-star defensive back.

Dontae Balfour recently revealed his top three schools to Rivals and the Tigers made the cut, along with Auburn and North Carolina.

“With LSU, it is all about coach Corey Raymond,” said Balfour to Rivals. “He has coached a lot of top defensive backs, he has put a lot of guys into the NFL and we have a good relationship.”

Balfour, 6-foot-2/170 lbs from Starke, FL (Bradford), is rated by 247Sports as the No. 55 cornerback in the nation and the No. 84 player in the state of Florida.

Dontae Balfour could be an underrated get for LSU football

Balfour’s ranking isn’t very impressive, but that doesn’t always tell the full story.

The Florida native has the ideal height/length combination to be a successful defensive back in the SEC. He also has the speed to succeed at LSU (Balfour runs track and plays basketball in high school, too).

These are the types of players that programs land that don’t generate headlines but then end up being a key part of the program.

As far as whether or not the Tigers will land Balfour?

I like LSU’s chances (as long as Ed Orgeron and his staff want him to be a part of the Tigers’ 2021 recruiting class).

LSU has done a great job with defensive backs over the years (they truly are DBU) and Raymond is one of the best recruiters in the nation. If the Tigers are determined to land Balfour, I can’t see them missing.

Balfour is planning to announce his decision on National Signing Day (February 3).
