LSU Football: Tigers land commitment from 4-star defensive back
By Zach Ragan
LSU football received some good news on the recruiting front on Sunday morning.
2022 four-star defensive back Laterrance Welch announced his commitment to the Tigers (via Twitter).
Welch, 6-foot-1/180 lbs from Lafayette, LA (Acadiana), is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 18 cornerback in the nation and the No. 9 player in the state of Louisiana. He’s also rated as the No. 156 overall player in the nation.
The Louisiana native committed to LSU over offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Texas A&M, among many others.
Laterrance Welch is a big get for LSU football
LSU doesn’t currently have a defensive coordinator, but that isn’t a big concern for Welch.
“I’m just keeping an eye on it, taking it one step at a time and hopefully once everything’s settled down and they hire whoever they need to hire I can build a relationship with them and build a relationship for the future,” said Welch recently to 247Sports.
With Welch, the Tigers are getting a dynamic player that has the length and speed to be a very successful cornerback in the SEC.
It’s not a surprise that LSU landed Welch, either. The Tigers, after all, are considered “DBU”.
Combine that with the fact that Welch is an in-state player and it should’ve been a foregone conclusion that he’d end up at LSU after receiving an offer from the Tigers earlier this month.
With Welch’s commitment, LSU now has eight commits to its 2022 recruiting class. That 2022 class is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation and No. 1 in the SEC.
