LSU football still has a couple of spots left to fill on their coaching staff.

The Tigers hired Daronte Jones this week to replace Bo Pelini as LSU’s defensive coordinator.

Jones previously served as the defensive backs coach for the Minnesota Vikings.

According to a report on Wednesday, Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron could also be looking to the NFL for a new defensive line coach.

Could LSU football land another former NFL assistant?

247Sports reported on Wednesday that Andre Carter, who has been the New York Jets’ defensive line coach for the past two seasons, is set to interview with Coach O and the Tigers this week.

Carter, who is a former first-round NFL draft pick out of California, is available because he wasn’t retained by new Jets head coach Robert Saleh.

Orgeron doesn’t have an obvious connection to Carter. The former Pro-Bowl defensive lineman played in the NFL from 2001-2013.

Carter got into coaching in 2017 as an assistant defensive line coach with the Miami Dolphins. He spent two seasons in Miami before following Adam Gase to New York (maybe Gase, a former LSU assistant in the early 2000’s, made a recommendation on his former assistant’s behalf).

I like the fact that Orgeron is looking for young up-and-coming former NFL assistants to fill spots on his staff. These guys obviously know how to coach or they wouldn’t get a shot in the NFL. And because of their youth, I think they’ll be successful on the recruiting trail (which is imperative).

I’ve been really impressed with the way that Orgeron has gone about hiring assistants this offseason. I don’t know whether or not these moves will pay off, but I think the approach has been fantastic.
