LSU Football: Early enrollee already receiving high praise
By Zach Ragan
LSU football put together an impressive 2021 recruiting class that was ranked No. 4 overall in the nation (247Sports composite rankings).
The crown jewel of the Tigers’ 2021 class is Maason Smith, a five-star defensive tackle from Houma, LA (Terrebonne).
Smith, who was rated as a top 20 overall 2021 recruit, signed with LSU over offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, and USC (among many others). He’s the highest-rated player in LSU’s 2021 class.
The Louisiana native enrolled early at LSU, which means he’s already on campus putting in work.
Maason Smith is already standing out for LSU football
It shouldn’t be a surprise, but Smith is already standing out for the Tigers, despite being on campus for less than a month.
LSU strength coach Tommy Moffitt spoke to 104.5 in Baton Rouge on Friday about the Tigers’ roster and he had plenty of positive things to say about Smith.
“I like to compare current freshmen to former players when they were freshmen,” said Moffit (via 247Sports). “Tyson Jackson, Michael Brockers, the size he (Maason Smith) has, he’s got more flexibility than those guys had and he’s probably leaner than they were at this time.”
“He’s got a great head start on some guys who were pretty good here.”
Moffitt added, “I don’t want to put pressure on him and say he’s going to be better than Michael Brockers or better than Tyson Jackson, but when you look at him physically, and structurally how he’s put together, he’s got phenomenal flexibility and he’s in good shape right now.”
It sounds like the Tigers have an absolute stud on their hands.
I can’t wait to see how Smith develops under Ed Orgeron and recently-hired defensive line coach Andre Carter. The dynamic defenisve lineman has the potential to be a great player in the SEC.
