2022 four-star wide receiver AJ Johnson, one of LSU football‘s top recruiting targets, was expected to announce his commitment on Monday.

Those plans, however, changed.

247Sports’ Sonny Shipp reported on Monday that Johnson, who plays high school football at Isidore Newman in New Orleans, opted to delay his commitment until a later date.

This is excellent news for the Tigers because the general feeling was that Johnson, who is ranked as the No. 32 wide receiver in the country, was leaning toward committing to the Georgia Bulldogs.

Is LSU football back in the mix to land AJ Johnson?

Georgia appeared to be in the lead for Johnson because of some family ties to the Peach State.

But something happened over the weekend that possibly got LSU back in the mix.

Three-star offensive lineman Bo Bordelon committed to the Tigers. Bordelon and Johnson are buddies, so this might be a reason why Johnson delayed his commitment on Monday.

It seems pretty clear that Johnson now has plenty to think about.

Of course, it’s not like Bordelon’s decision to commit to LSU was a surprise. Bordelon grew up rooting for the Tigers. And he has several family ties to LSU. Once Bordelon received an offer from Ed Orgeron and the Tigers, it was inevetiable that he was going to commit to LSU.

Whatever the reason for the delay, it’s good news for Coach O and the Tigers.

Johnson is an elite in-state player. He’s a kid that LSU definitely can’t watch head up the road to Athens.

Next. Coach O makes great defensive hire. dark

Johnson still has nearly a year before he can sign with a program. That means the Tigers have plenty of time to leapfrog Georgia in this intense recruiting battle.
