LSU football is one of the programs seriously in the mix to land 2022 five-star defensive lineman Shemar Stewart.

The Florida native, who is ranked as the No. 5 overall 2022 recruit in the country (247Sports composite), recently spoke to 247Sports about his recruitment.

Stewart noted that Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and LSU (and “maybe” Miami”) are the teams near the top of his list right now.

The elite defensive end is expected to release a top schools list in the near future.

What kind of shot does LSU football have to land Shemar Stewart?

Stewart told 247Sports that he’s been in regular communication with Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron and new linebackers coach Blake Baker (who was previously the defensive coordinator at Miami).

“They say that they really need me and that I’m a top priority for them,” said Stewart to 247Sports.

Stewart has yet to visit LSU, but he’s planning to head to Baton Rouge if/when the NCAA allows in-person recruiting to resume (the recruiting shutdown currently runs through April 15). He also plans to visit the other programs at the top of his list

While Miami is in the picture, it sounds like this is going to be a four-team battle between Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and LSU.

That shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Three of those four teams have won the last three national championships. And then there’s Georgia, who hasn’t won a national championship since 1980. But they still manage to recruit well, despite squandering talent on a regular basis (sorry Bulldogs fans, it’s true).

LSU has nine players committed to its 2022 recruiting class, which is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation.
