LSU Football: 3-star LB picks Texas Longhorns over Tigers

LSU football extended a scholarship offer in late January to three-star linebacker Trevell Johnson, but unfortunately for the Tigers, it doesn’t look like he’ll be playing college football in Baton Rouge.

Johnson, 6-foot-1/200 lbs from Arlington, TX (Martin), committed to the Texas Longhorns on Saturday.

The Texas native is ranked as the No. 21 inside linebacker in the country.

Johnson is described by Rivals as an “old-school defensive player” who has a “willingness and propensity for delivering big hits”.

I think Johnson is a player that LSU liked — thanks to the way he plays football (he’s a high energy grinder), but I don’t think he was a player that was anywhere near the top of their “wish list”.

LSU football has plenty of linebacker options

While Johnson would’ve been a nice addition for the Tigers (especially on special teams), there are plenty of better options still left on their recruiting board.

One of those players is three-star inside linebacker Kailep Edwards.

Edwards, 6-foot/221 lbs from Edgard, LA (West St. John), is ranked as the No. 17 inside linebacker in the 2022 recruiting class.

The Louisiana native, surprisingly, doesn’t have an offer yet from LSU. But I would expect that to change in the not-so-distant future.

Power-5 programs, including Arizona State, Penn State, and Tennessee, have started taking notice of Edwards in recent months. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Tigers follow with an offer soon.

Edwards already has the size to play in the SEC. And he has the quickness for the SEC as well (he’s a two-sport athlete that competes in track and field).

LSU will be just fine at linebacker, even without Trevell Johnson.
