LSU football is one of the programs heavily pursuing 2023 four-star cornerback Tony Mitchell.

Mitchell, 6-foot-2/180 lbs from Alabaster, AL (Thompson), is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 3 player in Alabama and the No. 1 cornerback in the 2023 recruiting class.

The Alabama native is also ranked as the No. 19 overall recruit in the 2023 class, which means he will very likely be elevated to five-star status at some point in the future.

Mitchell is going to be one of the most sought-after recruits during the 2023 recruiting cycle.

Where does LSU football stand in this recruiting battle?

Alabama and Auburn are obviously the early favorites here, but LSU is certainly in the mix.

“Florida State, LSU, Clemson, Florida, and Texas are the schools I have good relationships with early,” said Mitchell to 247Sports this week.

When it comes to the Tigers, Mitchell loves the program’s reputation with sending defensive backs to the NFL.

“I talk to Coach (Corey) Raymond and Coach O a lot,” said Mitchell to 247Sports. “Raymond is the GOAT. He’s put many great DBs in the league like Grant Delpit, Patrick Peterson, Tre’Davious White, etc.”

“They’ve always been a top college team every year.”

At 6-foot-2, Mitchell has the ideal size and length to be an effective lockdown cornerback in the SEC. Cornerback is one of the hardest positions to play in football, so it’s easy to see why so many programs are recruiting the 2023 defensive back so heavily this early.

Visits (whenever those are allowed to resume) will likely be what decides this recruiting battle.
