LSU Football: Tigers could be a factor for 5-star OL Devon Campbell

LSU football is working hard to become a factor for 2022 five-star offensive lineman Devon Campbell.

Campbell, 6-foot-4/295 lbs from Arlington, TX (Bowie), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 1 offensive guard in the country and the No. 7 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.

Texas appears to be the leader for Campbell, which isn’t a surprise. But USC and Oklahoma are major factors, too.

And Rivals recruiting analyst Adam Gorney said this week that LSU is “within striking distance”.

Can LSU football land Campbell?

Campbell told Rivals last fall that LSU was trying to get him to Baton Rouge “as fast as they can”, but that hasn’t been able to happen yet because of the recruiting dead period (which was recently extended through May 31).

Getting Campbell on campus is probably the only way the Tigers are going to become a major factor in his recruitment. The talented offensive lineman recently said he could commit “any day”. That doesn’t bode well for LSU’s chances.

Still, LSU will be in this battle until they’re not. And they should be. Campbell is an incredibly talented player. 247Sports recruiting analyst Gabe Brooks says Campbell “terrorizes second-level defenders and looks for extra work after eliminating first target” and “terrific functional athleticism that manifests in pulling ability and second-level blocking”. Campbell could provide a lot of versatility along LSU’s offensive line, too.

(Campbell also plays basketball in high school, which explains the exceptional athleticism for his size).

I tend to think Campbell will eventually end up committing to Texas. But the Tigers should still keep swinging here. You never know what could happen.

Recruiting, after all, has a reputation for being unpredictable.
