LSU football likely isn’t the team to beat for 2022 five-star athlete Gentry Williams, but that isn’t stopping the Tigers from pursuing the dynamic recruit.

Williams, 6-foot/170 lbs from Tulsa, OK (Booker T. Washington), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 athlete in the nation and the No. 19 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.

The Oklahoma native is listed as an athlete, but he’s expected to play cornerback at the collegiate level.

So what kind of shot does LSU have with Williams?

Could LSU football swipe an elite recruit from Big 12 country?

Williams doesn’t currently have an “official” leader in his recruitment.

But for now, I’d lean toward Oklahoma being the team to beat for the talented athlete. The Sooners have had plenty of success in recent years, and it’s the hometown school for Williams.

However, that doesn’t mean LSU is that far behind. Williams really likes the Tigers and the LSU coaching staff.

“Coach (Corey) Raymond and I have been talking a lot lately and we recently did a Zoom — just me and him — and he laid down his plan for me and it goes to be a defensive back at LSU,” said Williams recently to Rivals. “To him, it’s all about development and I really feel like I need to get down there and if I do, I have an opportunity to go there and be great.”

Florida and USC are also factors in Williams’ recruitment, so it’s not just the Sooners that LSU has to fend off.

This battle is definitely too close to call. I think visits could make all the difference for Williams, but it’s also entirely possible that he commits before visits are allowed to resume (the recruiting dead period currently runs through May 31).
