LSU Football: Forgotten WR could be ready to step up in 2021

When most folks talk about LSU football wide receivers that will play a big role in 2021, the first name that usually comes up is Kayshon Boutte.
Boutte, a former five-star wide receiver who was ranked as the No. 24 overall player in the 2020 recruiting class, had a tremendous freshman season for the Tigers this past season.
In 10 games, Boutte caught 45 passes for 735 yards and five touchdowns.
That’s a more impressive true freshman season than either Ja’Marr Chase or Justin Jefferson.
The other wide receivers that are usually mentioned are Jaray Jenkins and Koy Moore.
Moore, a former four-star wide receiver, caught 22 passes for 177 yards last season. Jenkins caught 23 passes for 397 yards and two touchdowns.
Could a forgotten wide receiver step up for LSU football?
While Boutte, Jenkins, and Moore are the first names mentioned when it comes to LSU wide receivers, there’s a “forgotten” name that could end up playing a big role for the Tigers in 2021.
Trey Palmer was the No. 18 rated wide receiver in the 2019 recruiting class. As a true freshman, he played behind Chase, Jefferson, and Terrace Marshall, catching only one pass for six yards.
This past season, Palmer made his biggest impact as a kick returner. But he still managed to contribute on offense, catching 10 passes for 108 yards.
Palmer is viewed as a potential slot receiver option for the Tigers (he’ll be battling Moore for that spot).
If Palmer is able to win a job as LSU’s starting slot receiver, he would provide the Tigers’ offense with much-needed game-breaking speed.
Palmer has legit NFL speed. And he’s great after the catch (as evidenced by his success returning punts and kicks). He’s the type of player that LSU offensive coordinator Jake Peetz needs to get in space and let him go to work.

The Kentwood, LA native has had a slow start to his college football career, but Palmer is a player that I believe has the potential to be an extremely important part of the Tigers’ offense in 2021.
