LSU football is among the top schools for one of the nation’s top-rated 2022 recruits.

Five-star defensive back Jacoby Mathews included the Tigers in his top six schools this week, along with Arizona State, Clemson, Florida, Texas, and USC.

Mathews, 6-foot-1/204 lbs from Ponchatoula, LA (Ponchatoula) revealed his top six via an Instagram post.

The highly touted recruit is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 safety in the country and the No. 32 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class. Mathews is also ranked as the No. 2 player in Louisiana.

Will LSU football keep Jacoby Mathews home?

LSU is tough to beat when it comes to landing elite players from Louisiana. The Tigers place huge importance on keeping in-state players from leaving.

But Mathews isn’t going to commit to LSU just because he’s from Louisiana. He’s going to do what he believes is best for him.

Mathews recently told 247Sports that visiting all the programs in his top six is “mandatory”. According to 247Sports, Mathews is scheduled to take an official visit to Florida on June 4 (assuming the NCAA recruiting dead period is lifted by then).

Ultimately, I’d be surprised if Mathews doesn’t end up committing to the Tigers. Ed Orgeron and his staff are clearly making him one of the centerpieces of their 2022 recruiting class. And LSU’s new defensive staff has been working hard to build a solid relationship with Mathews.

It’s certainly possible that a program like Clemson or Florida could steal the elite safety out of Louisiana, but I’d say that’s a long shot at best.

Coach O and his assistants know how to land studs like Mathews.
