LSU Football’s QB battle is more intense than we thought it would be
By Zach Ragan
When spring practice got underway for LSU football in March, I felt pretty confident that redshirt senior Myles Brennan would be the Tigers’ starting quarterback in 2021.
But almost a month later, that confidence is completely gone.
It’s not that I’ve lost any faith in Brennan — I still think he could be one of the top quarterbacks in the SEC in 2021.
Instead, it’s the fact that the other three quarterbacks in this battle look equally as capable of leading LSU to success this upcoming season.
We have no idea who LSU football’s starting QB will be in 2021
Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron has no idea who LSU’s starting quarterback will be in 2021, which means the rest of us have no clue, either.
Orgeron told 104.5 in Baton Rouge on Tuesday that the quarterback battle will continue through fall camp. In other words, don’t expect a starter to be anointed anytime soon.
“For a lot of these positions, especially the quarterback position, that will go through (fall) camp,” said Orgeron on Tuesday morning (via 247Sports). “It won’t be decided until towards the end of camp.”
It doesn’t appear that any of the Tigers’ quarterbacks are currently ahead in this battle.
“I think it was probably even throughout the quarterbacks (during LSU’s recent scrimmage),” explained Orgeron. “Again, this is a race all the way up until the end of camp.”
Brennan and Max Johnson are likely the front-runners in this race. Brennan has the most experience, while Johnson is 2-0 as the Tigers’ starting quarterback.
TJ Finley played well at times last season in relief of Brennan — and he got the first shot to start after Finley’s injury — so he can’t be discounted in this battle.
As for true freshman Garrett Nussmeier, I think he’s probably the most talented of LSU’s quarterbacks. But I can’t see Orgeron handing Nussmeier the reigns and letting the true freshman make his first career start on the road against UCLA.
Whatever happens, it has to be a good feeling for Tigers fans to know that LSU has a stable of quality quarterbacks on the roster.
