LSU Football: Tigers may have their next big offensive star
By Zach Ragan
LSU football may have found its next big offensive star this spring.
And it’s not a wide receiver or a quarterback.
(Surprising after the last couple of years, right?)
It’s a running back who will be a junior in 2021.
LSU football has a running back who is a “True No. 1”
Tyrion Davis-Price signed with LSU in 2019 as a four-star running back from Baton Rouge. He was ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 8 running back in the country.
The Louisiana native played in 14 games as a true freshman in 2019, but he spent most of his time backing up Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
In 2020, Davis-Price split time with John Emery and Chris Curry. Davis-Price ended up leading the team in rushing with 446 yards.
It’s not a big surprise that Davis-Price is expected to be the Tigers’ No. 1 running back in 2021. He was the most effective running back on the roster last season.
But it’s starting to feel like a scenario where we’ll see less of a committee approach by Ed Orgeron. Instead, we’ll see Davis-Price emerge as LSU’s clear No. 1 running back.
Sonny Shipp, who covers the Tigers for 247Sports, reported on Monday morning that sources inside LSU’s program felt Davis-Price looked like a legit No. 1 running back in the Tigers’ spring game this past week. Shipp also noted that those same sources said Davis-Price has his “quickness and explosiveness” back.
Davis-Price is exactly what NFL teams look for in a running back. He has great size (6-foot-1/232 lbs), but he also has the explosiveness needed to excel in the NFL.
I think we’re going to see Davis-Price develop into a household name in the SEC in 2021. Last season he learned how to be the top option in the running game.
This season, I think we’ll see Davis-Price lean on his experience from last season and take a major step forward in his development.
