LSU Football: How Ja’Marr Chase showed unreal confidence on draft night
By Zach Ragan
Former LSU football wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase landed in a dream scenario on draft night.
Chase was selected with the No. 5 overall pick by the Cincinnati Bengals, which will reunite the former Tigers standout with Joe Burrow.
The dynamic wide receiver/quarterback combo helped lead LSU to one of the greatest college football seasons ever in 2019.
Chase, who opted out of the 2020 season, caught 84 passes for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns as a sophomore in 2019. At the time, there were plenty of folks (including myself) that believed Chase would’ve been the first wide receiver selected in the 2020 NFL Draft had he been eligible.
Former LSU football WR Ja’Marr Chase shows unreal confidence
Part of the reason that Chase is so good is because he’s an extremely confident player.
Chase believes in his abilities. He is confident he can be great for the Bengals.
He’s so confident, in fact, that he threw out a statement on Thursday night that shows he has high expecations for his NFL career.
“Imma break every record they got at the Bengals,” said Chase (via ESPN). “I’m telling you right now, I’m gonna break every record they have. I don’t know how I’m gonna do it, but it’s gonna get done.”
This may come across as arrogant to some folks, but I don’t think that’s the case at all.
Chase is a top-five pick. The expectations for a top-five pick are extremely high. Franchises take players in the top five that they believe will be perennial Pro-Bowl players. It’s good news for Cincinnati that Chase is coming to town with the expectation that he’s going to break franchise records.
That’s the type of player you want on your team. And I’m sure Burrow will be excited to be reunited with his old LSU teammate.
