LSU football is one of the four teams still in the mix for one of the nation’s top-rated 2023 recruits.

Five-star quarterback Malachi Nelson is expected to announce his commitment on July 18, which is his parents’ anniversary.

Oklahoma, LSU, Ohio State, and USC are the four teams still in the race for the coveted quarterback.

Nelson, 6-foot-3/180 lbs from Los Alamitos, CA (Los Alamitos), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the country and the No. 1 player in California. He’s also rated as the No. 4 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class.

What are LSU football’s chances of landing Malachi Nelson?

LSU is in an interesting position when it comes to Nelson.

The Tigers’ top 2023 quarterback target is obviously Arch Manning — the top-rated 2023 quarterback.

Manning isn’t going to make his decision anytime soon.

If Nelson commits to LSU, it would seemingly eliminate the Tigers from the Arch Manning sweepstakes. Likewise, if Nelson knows that Manning is a possibility in Baton Rouge, it could alter the way he views the situation in LSU.

In other words, it doesn’t seem likely that Nelson will end up playing for Ed Orgeron and the Tigers.

Oklahoma, in fact, is viewed as the current favorite to land the talented quarterback.

However, while Nelson seems unlikely to play for LSU, the fact the Tigers are among his top schools shows us how elite quarterbacks view LSU and the future of the program.

Next. LSU could be repeating a costly mistake. dark

Elite quarterbacks want to be in Baton Rouge. It’s almost automatic that LSU is going to be in the mix for any elite signal-caller.

It’s a good spot to be in for the Tigers.
