LSU football appears to be one of the two programs that’s standing out the most for one of the nation’s top-rated linebackers.

2022 five-star linebacker Shawn Murphy, 6-foot-2/215 lbs from Manassas, Va (Unity Reed), is rated by Rivals as the No. 1 linebacker in the country and the No. 26 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.

Murphy recently took visits to Georgia, Florida, Florida State, and LSU.

The stud linebacker discussed those visits with Rivals.

“It was a lot of fun to be honest, being around all the guys committed, they were very welcoming and the environment was really good period,” said Murphy of the visit.

Murphy also said that current LSU commits are telling him to “stop playing games and come on home”.

LSU football and Alabama appear to be the frontrunners for Shawn Murphy

According to Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney, it appears that LSU and Alabama are currently the top two contenders for Murphy.

“The rumor on the five-star linebacker is that Alabama and LSU have surged to the top in his recruitment after recent visits to both schools,” wrote Gorney this week.

Gorney qualified that statement by adding that “Florida, Georgia, Ohio State, Penn State, and others can’t be counted out yet”.

It’s not a surprise that a battle for that nation’s top linebacker will likely come down to Alabama and LSU.

After all, those are two of the programs putting the most talent in the NFL in recent years.

We’ll see how this battle plays out. It’s much too early to know where Murphy will land.

But I certainly like LSU’s chances with the elite defender.
