LSU football is going to have a battle on its hands to keep one of the program’s top 2022 commits on board.

Four-star cornerback Laterrance Welch committed to the Tigers in late January.

Welch, 6-foot-1/180 lbs from Lafayette, LA (Acadiana), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 14 cornerback in the country and the No. 7 player in Louisiana. He’s also ranked as the No. 121 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.

The talented defensive back recently visited Florida State and Texas A&M. And he’s expected to take visits to Auburn and Oklahoma in the near future.

Will LSU football keep Laterrance Welch?

While LSU will need to work hard to keep Welch committed, there are several reasons why LSU fans shouldn’t fret.

For starters, Welch is from Louisiana. And Ed Orgeron doesn’t often miss on elite in-state recruits. It’s hard to imagine Welch eschewing LSU for a program like Oklahoma or Texas A&M.

Another reason I don’t think the Tigers are in danger of losing Welch is because of recent comments from Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney.

“The feeling is that the four-star cornerback from Lafayette Acadiana will remain committed to LSU and sign with the Tigers,” said Gorney this week.

“LSU looks good,” added Gorney.

It’s not unusual for commits to take visits to other programs. These kids only get the chance to enjoy the recruiting process once. They might as well use their official visits and see as much of the college football world as they can.
