LSU football received some not-so-great news on Friday when 2022 five-star safety Jacoby Mathews announced his decommitment from the Tigers.

Mathews, a Louisiana native, originally committed to LSU in April.

That’s obviously not the news the Tigers wanted to learn on Friday. But the good news is that LSU still has time to get Mathews back in the commit column.

And there’s also a strong possibility the Tigers will land another elite 2022 defensive back.

Recruiting analyst predicts LSU football will land elite 2022 defensive back

Rivals national recruiting director Adam Gorney took some time this week to discuss where he thinks 2022 four-star defensive back Azareyeh Thomas will land.

And Gorney believes it will be LSU that lands Thomas.

“Playing cornerback or safety in college is what the four-star will do, and LSU does such a phenomenal job developing players at those positions,” said Gorney this week. “Florida will have a shot at its Friday Night Lights camp, but it’s going to be an uphill battle. Right now, I see Thomas picking LSU.”

Florida and Georgia Tech are the other two programs in the mix to land Thomas.

LSU hosted Thomas on an official visit in mid-June that went extremely well according to Gorney.

“That June visit to Baton Rouge was super important for Thomas to convince him it would be the best spot for him,” said Gorney.

Thomas, 6-foot-1/177 lbs from Niceville, FL (Niceville), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 4 athlete in the country and the No. 16 player in Florida. He’s also rated as the No. 105 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.
