LSU football received some tough news late last month when five-star defensive back Jacoby Mathews announced his decommitment from the Tigers.

“After deep consideration, my parents and I have thought a lot through and I have decided to decommit from Louisiana State University and re-open my recruitment,” said Mathews in a tweet.

Mathews, 6-foot-2/200 lbs from Ponchatoula, LA, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 safety in the country and the No. 3 player in Louisiana (Rivals has Mathews as the top player in Louisiana).

This is obviously a player that LSU has to land. The Tigers are THE destination for top defensive backs. Missing on the best defensive back in Louisiana would be a travesty.

Fortunately for the Tigers, the recruiting industry seems to believe that Mathews will eventually land back with LSU.

Recruiting analysts believes LSU football will still land Jacoby Mathews

Rivals recruiting analysts Adam Gorney and Sam Spiegelman recently gave their opinion on Mathews’ recruitment. And they each believe he’ll be playing college football for the Tigers.

“Mathews couldn’t visit other SEC schools if he was committed to LSU so why not decommit, see those places and then figure out what is best? Top in-state kids almost always end up with the Tigers,” said Gorney.

“Mathews was an early LSU commitment this cycle and remains very close to the staff at LSU….I like the Tigers’ chances of eventually winning out if they continue to make Mathews a top priority,” added Spigelman.
