LSU football lost a 2022 four-star commit on Friday.

Four-star wide receiver AJ Johnson announced that he is reopening his recruitment.

“I am opening things back up,” said Johnson to 247Sports. “It’s still an opportunity for LSU, (I am) just opening things back up”.

The four-star wideout had been committed to the Tigers since February 19.

According to Rivals, Johnson actually decommitted from LSU last month. He just decided to go public with the decision on Friday.

Johnson, 6-foot-2/205 lbs from New Orleans, LA (Isidore Newman), is ranked in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 40 wide receiver in the country and the No. 14 player in Louisiana.

LSU football has some work to do

The talented wide receiver won’t be playing high school football in Louisiana in 2021. Johnson told 247Sports that he’ll instead be playing high school football in Florida.

“I’m also moving to West Palm Beach,” explained Johnson. “So I will be playing my senior year at another school.”

Losing Johnson’s commitment isn’t a brutal blow to LSU by any means. The Tigers have plenty of young wide receivers on the roster. They also have two other 2022 in-state wide receivers committed.

And let’s be honest — there’s always going to be plenty of high school wide receiver talent in Louisiana.

But at the same time, it would be tough to watch a New Orleans native go to another program — especially another SEC program — and have success.

Next. When will Myles Brennan return from injury?. dark

We’ll see how this plays out. The Tigers are still a factor, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Johnson ended up playing college football outside of Baton Rouge.
