LSU football‘s 2022 recruiting class took a hit late last month when five-star defensive back Jacoby Mathews announced his decommitment from the Tigers.

“After deep consideration, my parents and I have thought a lot through and I have decided to decommit from Louisiana State University and re-open my recruitment,” tweeted the Ponchatoula, LA native.

Mathews, 6-foot-2/205 lbs, is rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 2 safety in the country and the No. 26 overall player in the 2022 recruiting class.

While losing Mathews was obviously very unfortunate for LSU, it remains very possible that he’ll end up in the Tigers’ 2022 signing class.

Jacoby Mathews sounds like a recruit who will sign with LSU football

Mathews discussed his recruitment this week with 247Sports and he certainly sounds like someone who is still strongly considering LSU.

“I just told him (Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron)I felt like I committed too early and he told me he understood and they’re going to keep recruiting me,” Mathews said.

“They’re definitely one of my top schools and it’s a possibility I can recommit there,” added Mathews.

The talented defensive back also told 247Sports that he “loves what they have there (at LSU)”.

The other program that seems to be in the mix to land Mathews is Texas A&M.

Mathews likes the Aggies, but he doesn’t seem nearly as excited about Texas A&M as he does with LSU.

This seems like a situation where Mathews just wanted to take a step back after visits were reopened this summer to make sure he’s making the right decision.

I don’t think that’s a bad idea. It’s better for any recruit to be sure before they sign.

Next. LSU squarely in the mix for Arch Manning. dark

But ultimately, I think Mathews ends up signing with the Tigers.
