LSU Football: True freshman is a complete running back that can do it all
By Zach Ragan
LSU football has a true freshman on the roster that has the potential to be a major star in the SEC.
Running back Armoni Goodwin, a former four-star recruit from Alabama, signed with the Tigers during the early signing period in December. He was rated in 247Sports’ composite rankings as the No. 7 running back in the country and the No. 6 player in Alabama.
Goodwin likely won’t start for LSU in 2021 — thanks to the presence of Tyrion Davis-Price and John Emery.
But it sounds like he should still see plenty of playing time as a true freshman.
LSU football head coach Ed Orgeron is a big fan of Armoni Goodwin
Tigers head coach Ed Orgeron was asked this week about his freshmen running backs.
And he was extremely quick to praise Goodwin.
Orgeron described Goodwin as a running back who can get to the edge, or run up the middle. He also said Goodwin can go side to side and is good with the ball in his hands.
Here are Orgeron’s full comments on Goodwin (via 247Sports):
"Armoni’s been making some big plays. He’s smooth, he’s fast, he can get to the edge. Runs over the middle, but he avoids tackles. Can go side by side fast. He’s good with the ball in his hands."
Goodwin isn’t a huge running back — he’s listed at 5-foot-9/185 lbs — but it sounds like he could be a key contributor in all facets of the game, despite his small stature.
LSU wants to get the ball into the hands of its playmakers in space in Jake Peetz’s offense. Goodwin is certainly a player who can do a lot of damage in the open field.
However, the young running back isn’t limited to just getting into space — he’s physical enough that he can run the ball up the middle successfully.
If Goodwin puts on about 20 lbs of muscle, he could easily end up being the next Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
Wouldn’t that be nice?!?!?!
