LSU football is going to prove in 2021 that either the 2020 season or the 2019 season was a fluke.

Obviously, the Tigers are hoping to prove that the 2020 season was the one that was a fluke.

Ed Orgeron’s squad went 5-5 last season, which was a bit disappointing after the way the program totally dominated college football in 2019.

With two games remaining in the 2020 season, it looked like a 3-7 season was a real possibility for LSU.

The Tigers, however, managed to rally and finish the season with two straight wins (against Florida and Ole Miss), avoiding the program’s first losing season since 1999.

In 2021, LSU needs to win at least 10 games to prove that the program is still on a championship track under Orgeron.

If that’s going to happen, there are three games on the schedule that feel a little more important than the others.

3. Auburn vs LSU — October 2 (Baton Rouge)

LSU lost two games in 2020 to programs that were led by new head coaches — Mississippi State (Mike Leach) and Missouri (Eliah Drinkwitz).

Those are two games the Tigers should never have lost. LSU was clearly the more talented team. And both of those programs were still finding their way under new head coaches. If the Tigers manage to win both of those games, LSU’s 2020 season is viewed in a completely different way (7-3 doesn’t sound so bad after losing 14 players to the 2020 NFL Draft).

That’s why the game against Auburn, who will be led by former Boise State head coach Bryan Harsin, is so important.

Auburn is still a talented team, despite firing Gus Malzahn after the 2020 season. In fact, Auburn finished with a better record (6-4) than LSU last season. This isn’t a program that’s necessarily rebuilding.

Since it’s a home game, it’s a game where LSU will definitely be favored (our friends at WynnBET will have the odds for you).

LSU can’t lose this game and still win 9 or 10 games. It’s pivotal that Coach O leads his team to a win against a first-year SEC head coach in Harsin.
