Former LSU football quarterback Joe Burrow showed the nation on Thursday night why the Cincinnati Bengals selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The Bengals faced a 14-0 deficit at halftime against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night in Cincy.

Burrow led Cincinnati to 24 second-half points, including a key second-and-13 play where the former LSU star called a jailbreak screen pass to tight end CJ Uzomah that led to the game-winning field goal.

The play was all Burrow. He saw what the Jaguars’ defense was doing and he called the perfect play. That decision led to the Bengals’ third win of the season.

That probably doesn’t come as a surprise to LSU fans who followed Burrow in college — he had a tendency to make things happen in stressful moments.

It doesn’t come as a surprise to Burrow’s Cincy teammates, either.

The best Joe Burrow quote yet

After the game, Uzomah talked about the game-winning play and Burrow.

And Uzomah gave what I think is the best quote about Burrow to date.

Here’s what he had to say about the jailbreak screen that Burrow called (via Paul Dehner Jr.):

"“Joey Franchise is just back there dealing dots out there knowing and understanding what the defense is doing. He called that play up and just made something happen. He gave me a wink after I caught it and I was like, ‘This guy here, he’s reckless.’ He’s the smartest person out there at all times.”"

It’s the last part that I love so much.

“He’s the smartest person out there at all times.”

I don’t know if that statement is true or not — but all that matters is that Burrow’s teammate believes it’s true.

Most important game of the year for LSU?. dark. Next

Here’s the scary thing for the rest of the league:

Burrow is just getting started. He’s still learning how to play in the NFL. Burrow is only going to get better (and smarter) from here.

Good luck to the rest of the AFC North — you’re going to have your hands full with this guy for a while.
