It appears that a coaching change for LSU football is inevitable.

The Tigers were hoping to bounce back in 2021 under Ed Orgeron after a lackluster 5-5 season in 2020.

Instead, LSU is sitting at 3-2 with a stretch of tough games on the horizon.

The issues that plagued the Tigers in 2020 are still a problem in 2021 — despite a largely new coaching staff.

At this point, it’s apparent that the issue isn’t who Orgeron is hiring. It’s Orgeron himself.

And as a result, it looks like a coaching search could be on the way to Baton Rouge later this year.

Why a coaching change will likely happen for LSU football

Bruce Feldman reported this week that “industry experts” believe that LSU athletic director Scott Woodward wants to make a coaching change. Those same experts say that Woodward has felt that way since last year.

Woodward, an LSU graduate who previously worked at Texas A&M and Washington, wasn’t the athletic director who hired Orgeron. That’s why the clock has essentially been ticking on Orgeron’s time as LSU’s head coach since the season-opening loss to Mississippi State last year.

Unless there’s a wild turnaround by Coach O and the Tigers this year — and there’s no indication of that happening right now — LSU will be looking for a new head coach.

Orgeron is only 8-7 sine leading the Tigers to a national championship in 2019. I know it feels weird to talk about firing a head coach who is just two years removed from winning it all, but let’s not forget that Gene Chizik went through the same thing at Auburn after winning a national championship with Cam Newton.

Next. Coach O gets called out. dark

It’s safe to say that Joe Burrow is Orgeron’s Cam.

And there aren’t many Burrows or Cams out there. That’s why LSU needs to find a coach who can consistently win without a generational talent at quarterback.
