Former LSU football quarterback Joe Burrow is having a tough time in the NFL.

And some of it is his own fault.

Burrow, the No. 1 pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2020 NFL Draft, tore his ACL as a rookie last season. Poor protection led to the torn ACL. But the poor protection can’t take the blame for all of the hits that Burrow has absorbed so far in the NFL.

This past weekend, in a 25-22 loss to the Green Bay Packers, Burrow took a vicious hit from a defender as he was trying to pick up a first down in a third-and-12 situation.

Burrow finished the game, but he was taken to a hospital after the loss for a preliminary evaluation for a throat contusion.

The former Tigers standout checked out OK and he’s expected to play next weekend against the Detroit Lions.

The injury scared could’ve been prevented if Burrow would’ve slid instead of putting his body in a position to take a hit.

Joe Burrow gets advice from Aaron Rodgers

Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, a future Hall of Famer, had some sage advice for Burrow this week.

Rodgers, who was appearing on the Pat McAfee Show, encouraged Burrow to slide, saying “You’re too damn talented”.

Here are Rodgers’ full comments, via The Athletic (free):

"“Slide. I said, ‘You’re too damn talented,'” Rodgers said he told Burrow after the game, via the Pat McAfee Show on Tuesday. “‘You’ve got so much in front of you to accomplish in this league. Sometimes you gotta slide.’ I would’ve said the same thing to Andrew (Luck).”Added Rodgers, “I’m a Joe Burrow fan and I enjoy the way he goes about his business.”"

Burrow is an intense competitor. It’s no surprise that he’s willing to put his body in harm’s way to pick up a couple of extra yards.

But if he wants to play in the NFL for a long time, he can’t play the game that way. Injuries will ruin a quarterback’s career.

Burrow has the talent to be an all-time great. But if he keeps taking these types of hits, his career in the NFL will be short-lived.
