Mel Tucker — Michigan State head coach

This is a name that’s popped up in recent days. He wasn’t really on my radar as a potential replacement, but The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman reported that some important folks in Baton Rouge really like Tucker.

Tucker is in his second season at Michigan State. He went 2-5 in 2020, but he has the Spartans at 7-0 this season.

The Ohio native was a defensive backs coach at LSU in 2000. He’s also spent time as an assistant at Ohio State, Alabama, and Georgia. He was the head coach at Colorado in 2019 and was the interim head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2011.

Tucker was the Jaguars’ defensive coordinator from 2009-2012. He was the Browns’ defensive coordinator in 2008. It’s hard to say he’d be an upgrade over Orgeron because we have limited information. But his resumé is certainly impressive.
