LSU Football Coaching Search: Dabo Swinney isn’t going to be the Tigers’ next head coach
By Zach Ragan
The LSU football coaching search is off to a wild start.
We’ve heard nearly every prominent name in the country connected to the LSU job in some form or fashion.
One of the rumors that isn’t going away is that LSU could strongly pursue Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney.
The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman first reported that Tigers athletic director Scott Woodward would swing big and possibly go after Swinney.
This week, the rumor gained more steam after SEC Network host Paul Finebaum threw out Swinney’s name for the LSU job.
“There are some who believe the AD Scott Woodward wants — you ready for this — Dabo Swinney,” said Finebaum (via On3.com).
Dabo Swinney isn’t going to be the next LSU football head coach
I’d be willing to bet a significant amount of money that Swinney won’t be LSU’s head coach.
And it’s not because Swinney recently told reporters “This (Clemson) is the only Death Valley I’m worried about”.
It’s because it just doesn’t make sense.
Swinney has a lot of equity built at Clemson. He’s a king in South Carolina. Why start over at LSU, where he could end up failing?
I don’t think Swinney’s personality is a good fit for Baton Rouge, either. The “aw shucks” act would get old real quick in the face of adversity in the SEC West. He’s far too sensitive to survive at LSU.
I also think the only way Swinney leaves Clemson is if he takes over at Alabama, his alma mater, for Nick Saban one day (if Saban ever retires).
Swinney to LSU is an interesting rumor. And it’s fun for folks like Finebaum to talk about while filling multiple hours of television every day. But it’s not happening. So there’s no real reason to even entertain it.
