LSU Football Coaching Search: James Franklin appears to be gearing up to leave Penn State
By Zach Ragan
Penn State head coach James Franklin appears to be on his way out of State College, does that mean he’s a candidate to replace Ed Orgeron as LSU football‘s head coach?
Franklin, who has flirted with schools in the past while at Penn State, is switching agents according to a report from Football Scoop.
The Penn State head coach was previously represented by Trace Armstrong. According to Football Scoop, he’s switching to super-agent Jimmy Sexton, who represents some of the highest-profile coaches in college football (Nick Saban, Lane Kiffin, Kirby Smart, etc).
Sexton is known for getting his clients the most money possible in deals. With several jobs open, it looks like Franklin is preparing for a move and he wants to maximize his earnings.
Is James Franklin a candidate for LSU Football?
It’s hard to say what Tigers athletic director Scott Woodward’s list of potential coaches looks like right now. There’s still a lot of season left to be played.
Franklin, however, is undoubtedly on his list — though I’m not sure how high up the list he’ll be.
Penn State lost this past weekend to Illinois in a thrilling nine overtime game. I don’t know what kind of impact that loss will have on the search.
There’s also the fact that Franklin will likely be a candidate at USC. His aggressive personality would probably be a good fit at USC, but it could also work at LSU. Franklin proved at Vanderbilt that he can have success in the SEC. It’s certainly possible that he’d like to return to the best conference in college football and take one of the top five jobs in the sport (I think the LSU job is better than the USC job).
It’s still very early in this search. Lots will change in the coming weeks. But Franklin is a name worth keeping an eye on.
